Peculiarities of Physical Development of Primary School Age Children in Lviv


Objective. Work out criteria of physical development and analyze the current trends of physical development of 7- and 9-year-old schoolchildren by the indexes of body length and weight, chest circumference.

Materials and methods. An anthropometric examination of 496 schoolchildren of 7-yearold (228 boys, 268 girls) and 414 schoolchildren of 9-year-old (212 boys, 202 girls) in Lviv was conducted. Body length and weight, chest circumference, assessment of physical development according to body length (average, above and below average, low and high), the degree of its harmonicity (harmonic, disharmonic, sharply disharmonic) were determined by conventional methods. Dynamics of the anthropometric parameters of children from 1996 to 2015 taking into account the absolute growth and growth rate in schoolchildren from 7 to 9 years was analysed. Mathematical and statistical analysis was conducted by a least-squares method with determination of the significance of the results by Student’s t-test using Microsoft Excel which is part of the Microsoft Office software and STATISTICA.

Results. It was developed regression scales for estimation of physical development of 7- and 9-year-old children with appropriate regression equations for 7-year-old boys: у = -53,96+0,6322x, z = -0,69+0,4946x, for 7-year-old girls: у = -41,12+0,526x, z = 10,75+0,3945x, for 9-year-old boys: у = -63,24+0,695x, z = 6,18+0,432x, for 9-year-old girls: у = -48,41+0,5814x, z = 14,41+0,3652x, where x – body length, y – weight, z – chest circumference. It was revealed that approximately 70 % of the examined children have the average body length and harmonic development, the percentage of girls with above average and below average physical development exceed the percentage of boys of the same body length, boys with high and low body length are much more than girls. In both age groups with harmonic development were more boys than girls.

The disharmonic development of 7-year-old boys due to excess of body weight and increase the chest circumference. The disharmonic development of 7-year-old girls more due to deficiency of body weight and reduction in chest circumference. Sharply disharmonic development of 7-yearold children due to excess body weight and increase the chest circumference. In the group of 9-year-old children with disharmonic development dominated the children with deficiency of body weight and the reduced chest circumference than with excess, above all it is concerned the girls, sharply disharmonic development in boys is caused mostly by the excessive body weight and increase the chest circumference. The growth rate of anthropometric parameters of boys and girls from 7 to 9 years has increased compared to 1996 which confirms the acceleration of physical development. It was found that dynamics of changes of body length and body weight in schoolchildren over the past 19 years indicates the activation of the processes of acceleration on the background of asthenization and gracialization in modern children.
